Child and Adolescent Counselling
Building resilience, self esteem and emotion coping strategies
Major Life course events for children and adolescents are often significant but sometimes overlooked as we overestimate children's resilience and coping methods. Events such as changing schools, forming friendships, puberty, bereavement, divorce, moving home, home schooling and social isolation throughout the Covid 19 pandemic may have significant impacts on their mental health. Such events may cause children and adolescents to experience problems in areas such as forming positive relationships, coping with grief and loss and managing anxiety and depression.
Help children and adolescents build compassion for themselves and others by dealing with self-concept and self- destructive beliefs . Through counselling, children and adolescents develop skills by rehearsing values-based behaviour and emotion-coping strategies that deal with troubling events which have brought them to counselling.
Behavioural and cognitive strategies are used to help young people to understand and gain insight into themselves and become more aware of troubling emotions and underlying issues. Narrative strategies and exercises aim towards identifying values and goals and creating a story that challenges self destructive beliefs and highlights positive behaviour that take action to achieve life's values and goals.
